Semi final hopes alive

The old adage, ‘a wins a wins a win a win’ stands true for the ten to nil win over COBRAS. A horrible day for rugby, with at times gale force winds, rain showers, and the wind changing direction up and down the field all through the match seeing it pretty tough to play any sort of controlled football.

Whangamata played into the wind (mostly) in the first 40 minutes, and through staunch defence kept the home side scoreless, and in one of the rare forays into opposition territory, Pete Maisey managed to land a penalty goal to take the halftime score to three nil.

The second spell mirrored the first, with both sides finding it hard to control the ball, let alone string any or many phases together. Whangamata adapted to the conditions better though, and with one off running at the ruck and maul to the fore kept the pressure on the COBRAS line long enough for Pete Maisey to score his 4th try of the season. With the conversion the final score line of ten – nil was reached.

COBRAS were not finished though, and managed over the last five minute to exert pressure on the Whangamata line, but once again the red and whites did enough to hold out the repeated surges.

A tough match, Whangamata were well served up front by Ryan Tohaia and Mike Cunningham, while Maisey and Adam Brien were the pick of a cold and shivering looking backline.

Whangmata 10 (Maisey try, conversion, penalty).

COBRAS 0
