Coromandel Re-Match
THE SUN WAS ABOUT AND THE CROWD WAS GOOD DUE TO THE LONG WEEKEND!
Saturday the 5th June Coromandel travelled to Whangamata for their re-match after losing in the last minute on their turf 10th April (10-5).
Coromandel kicked off and applied pressure to a good kick and forced a turnover which pinned the Whanga Boyz in their red zone for the start of the game. It took a while of settling down to get out of our half. A number of line breaks were made but that last pass just didn't stick. Scrums and line-outs worked well for the home side with which they launched attack after attack but that last pass STILL didn't stick. Whanga took a penalty shot at goal to lead at half time 3-0.
The second half started in Whangas favour camped on their line which resulted in a try to "The Rock". Whanga 8 - Coro 0. Coromandel had a good kicking game and they used the wind to plug the corners. They had a number of penalty tap runs from ten out, but some big tackles stopped them short. They tried and tried but alas no cigar today! The game was a physical battle. The odd "biff", push and shove given and received!
During another raid in their half Whanga took a penalty shot which took the score to 11-0. Whanga still tried their attacks but that last pass STILL DIDN'T STICK! We blew perhaps 5 tries, 20 penalties against, one yellow card against them, claret. All in all an entertaining game but THAT WAS A BATTLE!
Coromandel were great after-match ambassadors and would have stayed longer but "The Booze Bus" was about and it was a long way home.
The other game of the Senior B competition, Waihi beat Paeroa Old Boys 37-7. North had a Bye. Whanga have the Bye next week so a few SPIES may attend the Waihi Vs North game.
