Soulburger 9th draw final

We went into this finals as the favourites and Waihi had nothing to lose, from the start they showed their commitment and determination to cause an upset.

They scored the first points of the game by breaking two tackles close to the line and going over in the corner.  Jamie Tohaia got his hands on the ball and had great run down the left, it took a good tackle by Waihi to stop him.  We got a lineout on half way, Zak Higgans got the ball at 1st 5 and ran between their halfback and 1st 5 to score a cracker of a try.

We started to secure a bit more ball now and get ourselves into the game, Tyran Sharpe had a dab round the outside and fended the first tackler, but the cover defence wrapped him up.  It was a forwards game this week with so much mauling going on as neither team was giving an inch!!

Waihi got a break down the right and Zak made a huge hit and nailed the player in the tackle. Zac was making good ground with his hard straight running, but Waihi's determined defence wasn't letting up.  Waihi got a break down the left and a great tackle by Tyran stopped him scoring.  We went into the break 5-5.

Jai Rowe got the ball close to the line and battled hard to go over low in the corner but so unlucky for him as he lost the ball forward.  We had a line out close to our 22, slow ball thru the backline and then running sideways saw us get caught and as Waihi had done all game, wrapped us up ball and all and drove us back, as we hit the try line they ripped the ball off us and scored.

We had a penalty awarded 15 metres out, from this Tyran tapped and ran straight and hard and dived between 2 players to score.  Jamie got he ball on half way and fended the first player brilliantly then sprinted down the field and was just caught by another great cover tackle from Waihi.  Their star player made a great break down the left, Thomas Lewis chased hard and just got enough on him to slow him down and then Mathew O'Grady pushed him into touch to stop a definite try.

The full time whistle went and the score was tied at 10 all, being a final we wanted to play extra time to have a winner, Waihi were happy to stop at 10 all, but the ref decided to play 2 minutes one way straight, which was a complete waste of time as the score stayed at 10 all.

Zak had his best game on attack and an outstanding game on defence, Jake Laing again had a huge work rate and was outstanding, Jamie who had been sick for the last 3 days make huge ground with his aggressive running, Jai again was again causing problems with darting runs and commitment on defence, Tyran's commitment on defence was excellent and he never gave up on attack.

Forward player of the day was Jake Laing, back player of the day was Zak Higgans, Waihi pick for best and fairest Zak Higgans.

Try scorers were Zak Higgans and Tyran Sharpe.

We finished the season unbeaten with 710 points for and 60 against. Well done boys!!!
