Waihi douses the Red 'n' Whites
A tough encounter, as it always is against Waihi, and 'over the hill' in gold mine country, even tougher.
Whangamata started well, pounding the Waihi line with numerous close in charges with the forwards leading the way, but being unable to crack the stalwart defence of the home team.
Waihi then turned the pressure around and opened the scoring with first a well taken try and then a penalty to take the score to 0-10.
Whangamata then got their scoring shoes on, with tries to Matt Prisk from a well taken quick tap, and then Eli Savage profited from a Brad Laurenson break for a second five pointer to tie the scores up at 10 apiece at the break.
After the half time oranges, it was Waihi adding to their score with Whangamata not playing field position as well as perhaps they should have, a penalty and a converted try taking the score out to 20-10.
Whangamata was not done yet though, a length of the field try to the flying Eli Byles, courtesy of a Peta Robinson break deep in side Whangamata's 22 saw the score close up again to 17-20.
Another defensive lapse allowed Waihi to close out the game though with time running out on the clock, and a converted try to Waihi saw the score extend out to ten again, 27-17.
A Kare Rose penalty bought the game within reach again, but that was shortly after cancelled out by a final three pointer to Waihi, final score 20-30 to the bad guys!
Top performances from Kurt Jacobs and Eli Byles saw them rewarded with player of the awards.
Whangamata 20 (Savage, Prisk, Byles tries; Rose conversion, penalty).
Waihi 30 (3 tries, 3 conversions, 3 penalties).

With Saturday's 20-9 win over Waihi, Whangamata have kept their semi final hopes alive. It'll be via the hard track though, thanks to Thames battling to an away 7-3 win over our next match up, Tairua. So no favours offered here by Thames!
The first game of the season where the coaching staff could almost relax before the 80th minute. With most every game this season going down to the wire, one way or the other, Whangamata comfortably dispatched cellar dwellers Waihou on Saturday.
